Ravid Goldschmidt, international artist pioneer in playing the Handpan Drum and creator of the OVAL the first digital Handpan – ovalsound.com. In 2002, fascinated by the beauty of its sound, he went to Switzerland (Hang original country) to dedicate himself to the study, development and manufacturing of this incredible percussion instrument. Yet unknown to a lot of people.

Its artistic journey goes from Spain, where he lives, to France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Sweden, Turkey, Egypt, Kuwait, United Stated, Centre America, Canada and Korea where he has performed and participated in several concerts and festivals.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 140 CHARACTERS?

I am passionate about music and when I do something I live it to the fullest intensity. For this reason, el handpan is a key element in my life.

THE HANDPAN DRUM THAT CAME INTO EXISTENCE IN 2000 IS A VERY RECENT AND UNKNOWN INSTRUMENT FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE YET. HOW DID YOU DISCOVER IT AND WHY DID IT BECOME YOUR PASSION?

I discovered the hang in 2002, in a festival where a Swedish guy who performed with this instrument and when he finished he let me touch it for a few seconds. In that moment, the people that were coming by, got closer to ask me when I was starting my concert, the amount of people were increasing. In that instant I realised that it was something important for me and I wanted to know and do a lot more. I contacted its creators in Switzerland and in a few months, I was working with them and building new models of the hang.

YOU HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE YOUR ART WITH PROFESSIONALS SUCH AS MARI FROM CHAMBAO, CARLES BENAVENT QUARTET, SILVIA PEREZ CRUZ OR THE SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA OF BARCELONA. WHAT THOSE HAVE MEANT IN YOUR PATH?

Because this is a completely new instrument it has been a challenge to collaborate with musicians no matter if they play jazz, classical music… Through the different music collaborations, I have been able to improve my technic this being a constant learning of the instrument on its own. The experience of playing the hang with singers is something that I especially like. With Silvia I had several years on tours and concerts and with Mari, in her last recording, everything was beautiful and magic. The combination of her unique voice and the sound of such special instruments as the Hang is, is remarkable. Playing with such big musicians as Carles Benavent is, it has been an honour and a gift. And working with the musicians of the OBC symphonic orchestra has opened doors for me in the field of classical music, which in fact works very well with the Hang.

CURRENTLY YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HANDPAN DRUM ARTIST WORLDWIDE. HOW DO YOU FEEL AT THIS STAGE OF YOUR CAREER?

The truth is that I like more and more the relation I have with the instrument and I feel very happy sharing unique moments on the stage. The creation of the Oval (the first digital Handpan) has opened me up to a connection with the electronic music and has allowed me to continue evolving even more in my musical path with new sounds and millions of possibilities.

YOU ARE THE CREATOR OF THE OVAL, THE DIGITAL VERSION OF THE HAND PAN. WHY DID YOU DIGITALISE IT?

The Oval was created due to the necessity I had of expanding my musical creation. The hang has only one musical tone. If you need more musical tones you need to buy the equivalent number of hangs. To play live you need at least 2 or 3 instruments, which with the time became more complex for weight and space reasons when transporting them. The Oval is digital and allows me to play almost all scales, as well as offering a great variety of interesting sounds using the same shape and structure as when playing hang. I don’t think it will be much longer until we see very interesting creations made with the Oval all around the world.

YOU HAVE BROUGHT THE HANDPANDRUM SOUND TO EVENTS OF SAMSUNG, ONTIME, EQUATE, MICROSOFT… WHAT POSSIBILITIES DOES THIS INSTRUMENT OFFER IN A MARKETING ACTION SUCH US AN EVENT, FOR EXAMPLE?

Both analogical or digital version, as a whole or separately, provide sounds filled with beauty, suitable to create atmosphere and attract attention. Brands look for something to difference themselves and have repercussion, and the hang is a clear option in that sense.

WHICH PROJECTS ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I am currently working in a project called Oval dimension- https://www.ovaldimension.com, which is a show of two live Oval playing with interactive images based on our own technology. We have incorporated recently a dancer to give more context to the show and provide an even more interesting and dynamic proposal. I am also developing Hang Duo, an acoustic project with 2 Hangs live, where we play chillout music and sometimes combined with Oval or other instruments such us a didgeridoo. I continue collaborating with different musicians/artists of all kinds- DJs, flamenco guitarists, dancers, live art, etc.
